Permanency Of Death

When the unsaved die, can they redeem themselves?

Watchtower answer:  The Watchtower’s answer is, “Yes; the unsaved dead get a clean slate and have a second chance to follow Jehovah” (see Bible Teach, p. 214).  “The Bible says: ‘He who has died has been acquitted from his sin’. (NWT Romans 6:7). Those resurrected thus come to life with a clean slate, so to speak.”

Note:  If you read Romans 6:7 in its context, you will quickly understand that the language (the metaphors used—our old nature, personality) is not referring to physical death, but rather resisting the sinful desires of the flesh.  Wow!  What a difference that makes.  Read the passages and see for yourself.

Bible answer:  The Scripture says, No—a man cannot redeem himself from the curse of the law by his own death, for his sacrifice (his own body) must be sinless.  God only accepted one sacrifice for sin and that was the sacrifice of His only begotten Son, Jesus Christ, the Sinless Lamb of God.

The death of the unsaved, the wicked, is permanent and irreversible.  The resurrection is for only two groups—the wicked (the unsaved) and the righteous (the saved).

John 5:28 Marvel not at this: for the hour is coming, in the which all that are in the graves shall hear his voice, 29 And shall come forth; they that have done good [the saved], unto the resurrection of life; and they that have done evil [the unsaved], unto the resurrection of damnation.

The unsaved are resurrected to damnation, not probation.  Can a man redeem his own soul?  Only the blood of Christ can redeem a soul and make it clean.

NWT Eph 2:1 Furthermore, [it is] YOU [God made alive] though YOU were dead (spiritually dead—separated from God) in YOUR trespasses and sins.

Ps 49:7 None of them can by any means redeem his brother, nor give to God a ransom for him:

1Pet 1:18 Forasmuch as ye know that ye were not redeemed with corruptible things, as silver and gold, from your vain conversation received by tradition from your fathers; 19 But with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot:

1Tim 2:5 For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus; 6 Who gave himself a ransom for all, to be testified in due time.

If you were not born-again, your name will not be written in the Lamb’s Book of Life, and you will be cast into the lake of fire and be tormented forever.

Rev 19:20 And the beast was taken, and with him the false prophet that wrought miracles before him, with which he deceived them that had received the mark of the beast, and them that worshipped his image. These both were cast alive into a lake of fire burning with brimstone.

Rev 20:10 And the devil that deceived them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet are, and shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever. 11  And I saw a great white throne, and him that sat on it, from whose face the earth and the heaven fled away; and there was found no place for them. 12 And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened: and another book was opened, which is the book of life: and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works. 13 And the sea gave up the dead which were in it; and death and hell delivered up the dead which were in them: and they were judged every man according to their works.  14 And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death. 15 And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire.
