Christ’s Body

Was Jesus bodily resurrected?

Jehovah’s Witnesses answer: No, God first disintegrated or destroyed Jesus’ body (that’s why it was not in the tomb), then He was recreated as spirit being who could materialize in different bodies (see WT CD Lib 2009; it-1 Body p. 348).

Note: During previous governing body administrations, Watchtower leaders said that Jesus’ body had been hidden like Moses’ body and “miraculously preserved.” (see The Watchtower’s Deliverance Book, p. 170 and The Time Is At Hand, pp. 129-131).

Also, the Watchtower’s main objection to the bodily resurrection of Jesus Christ is their idea that it would invalidate the sacrifice by taking back its life. If one would eliminate the Watchtower commentaries on this subject and stay strictly with the Scripture, the bodily resurrection of Jesus Christ would not come into question. Whenever the resurrection of Jesus is discussed, the Watchtower often uses this verse to support their view:

1Pet 3:18 For Christ also hath once suffered for sins, the just for the unjust, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh, but quickened by [by the power of His Spirit] the Spirit: KJV
1Pet 3:18 Why, even Christ died once for all time concerning sins, a righteous [person] for unrighteous ones, that he might lead YOU to God, he being put to death in the flesh, but being made alive in [in the power of His Spirit] the spirit. NWT

What 1Pet 3:18 does not say is that Christ was recreated as a spirit being, whether one uses the word “by” or “in.”

Was Jesus bodily resurrected?

Bible answer: Yes, Jesus Christ was bodily resurrected by His own power. The Scripture says, “He is risen; he is not here” ( Mark 16:6).

John 10:17-18 Therefore doth my Father love me, because I lay down my life, that I might take it again. 18 No man taketh it from me, but I lay it down of myself. I have power to lay it down, and I have power to take it again. This commandment have I received of my Father.

What was it that Jesus would take back again? He said it was His life; end of story! He also said that He had the power to resurrect it, and that’s exactly what He did.

Did Jesus lie to people about His bodily resurrection? Look at these verses and you be the judge, for one day they will judge you.

John 2:19-22 Jesus answered and said unto them, Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up. 20 Then said the Jews, Forty and six years was this temple in building, and wilt thou rear it up in three days? 21 But he spake of the temple of his body. 22 When therefore he was risen [his body was raised] from the dead, his disciples remembered that he had said this unto them; and they believed the scripture, and the word which Jesus had said.

Who raised up Jesus’ body?  He said, “I will raise it [his body] up.”

Did Jesus lie to His disciples when He said that He was not a spirit?  Look at these verses and you be the judge, for one day they will judge you.

Luke 24:36-43 And as they thus spake, Jesus himself stood in the midst of them, and saith unto them, Peace be unto you. 37 But they were terrified and affrighted, and supposed that they had seen a spirit. 38 And he said unto them, Why are ye troubled? and why do thoughts arise in your hearts? 39 Behold my hands and my feet, that it is I myself: handle me, and see; for a spirit hath not flesh and bones, as ye see me have. 40 And when he had thus spoken, he shewed them his hands and his feet. 41 And while they yet believed not for joy, and wondered, he said unto them, Have ye here any meat? 42 And they gave him a piece of a broiled fish, and of an honeycomb. 43 And he took it, and did eat before them.

If one does not believe in the bodily resurrection of Jesus Christ, he will never be resurrected with the saved, instead, he will be resurrected with the evil and spend eternity in the lake of fire and be tormented for ever and ever.

John 5:28-29 Marvel not at this: for the hour is coming, in the which all that are in the graves shall hear his voice, 29 And shall come forth; they that have done good, unto the resurrection of life; and they that have done evil, unto the resurrection of damnation.

Rom 10:9-10 That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead [bodily], thou shalt be saved. 10 For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.
